Eccentric Bear Soars Into Dallas With Unconventional New Production Of Chekhov's THE SEAGULL ImageEccentric Bear Theater Company presents its inaugural ensemble production: a new adaptation of Anton Chekhov's The Seagull, running October 3-6 at the historic Arts Mission Oak Cliff.

The Seagull, directed by Eccentric Bear's founder and Artistic Director Isaac Young, is a new take on Anton Chekhov's classic story of art, jealousy, and unrequited love. It's 1895, and tensions are running high at one sleepy Russian estate as esteemed actress Irina Arkadina introduces her playwright son to an unexpected new lover, bringing old jealousies to their boiling point.

The Eccentric Bear is turning the idea of Chekhov on its head by combining the story of The Seagull with elements of clown theatre and commedia dell'arte. "Chekhov's characters are all clowns." Young says. "They're petty and jealous and foolish. That's what makes them, and the clown, so human. I want to see what happens if we take that idea and amplify it until it just barely resembles something close to reality." Anton Chekhov is lauded as one of the greatest playwrights of all time, and his Seagull is a vivid reminder that while the world in which we live may have changed since 1895, human beings are still very much the same.
