Sweet alien transvestites will take over the Dee and Charles Wyly Theatre stage tonight, September 11, 2014 in Dallas Theater Center's all new production of the cult classic The Rocky Horror Show.
DTC's Associate Artistic Director Joel Ferrell will direct and choreograph this gender-bending, rock 'n' roll spectacle. Ferrell's previous director and choreographer roles include the hit productions Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat and Cabaret. The Rocky Horror Show begins previews tonight, September 11 with a Pay-What-You-Can performance and runs through Sunday, October 19. Two special midnight performances are scheduled for Friday, September 29 and Friday, October 17. Tickets to The Rocky Horror Show are on sale now at www.DallasTheaterCenter.org and by phone at (214) 880-0202.
"The Rocky Horror Show is what happens when we start thinking of the 'Island of Misfit Toys' as the 'Island of Incredibly Fabulous Toys.' This insanely popular show celebrates the most unique, sexually daring, and wildly funny characters ever written and gives them 'license to thrill,'" said Ferrell. "The Rocky Horror Show is raucous fun with a killer rock 'n' roll score and more than a dash of social politics."
The Rocky Horror Show is an outrageous rock musical, complete with transvestites, mad scientists and monsters. In the show, which premiered on Broadway more than 40 years ago, the audience gets lost with newly engaged couple Brad and Janet on a dark and stormy night. They get found after stumbling into Dr. Frank-n-Furter's Annual Transsexual Convention. Pure pleasure, bizarre sexual creations, energetic rock music and, yes, audience participation ensue, coming to a head with everyone's favorite dance - The Time Warp.
Dan Domenech leads the cast as Dr. Frank-n-Furter, the sweet transvestite from Transylvania. Domenech made his Broadway debut in Rock of Ages and starred as the title character in the Asian premiere of Tarzan. Joining him are J. Brent Alford (DTC: The Tempest, Arsenic and Old Lace) as the Narrator; Jeremy Dumont (DTC: The Fortress of Solitude, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor® Dreamcoat) as a Phantom; Brierley Resident Acting Company member Chamblee Ferguson (DTC: FLY, A Christmas Carol) as Riff Raff; Julie Johnson (National Tour: Memphis the Musical; DTC: Cabaret) as Magenta; Justin Labosco as Rocky; Walter Lee (DTC: Cabaret) as Columbia; Morgan Mabry Mason (DTC: LES MISERABLES) as Janet; Ryan-Patrick McLaughlin as a Phantom; Brierley Resident Acting Company Member Liz Mikel (Broadway: Lysistrata Jones; DTC: A Raisin in the Sun, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor® Dreamcoat) as Eddie/Dr. Scott; Brierley Resident Acting Company Member Alex Organ (LES MISERABLES, The Fortress of Solitude) as Brad; Ian Patrick Stack as a Phantom; Ani Celisa Vera as a Phantom; and Shannon Walsh as a Phantom.
"A major part of creating the intensity and spirit of Rocky Horror on stage is to let the music drive the energy throughout. When imagining the production, I immediately thought of DTC's wonderful collaborators Foe Destroyer to be the 'house band' for Frank-N-Furter and his wild Transylvanians," said Ferrell. "Dallas' own Vonda Bowling will supervise the musical insanity and Jeremy Dumont is on board again to help make the choreography explode with joy. The next exciting task was to assemble a creative team that would take the show to new heights. All the designers are brilliant friends who have created many of DTC's most daring and imaginative productions."
Music for The Rocky Horror show is by Austin/Brooklyn rock band Foe Destroyer, comprised of Daniel Garcia, Chris McQueen, Cade Sadler (DTC: Fly By Night), along with Kwinton Gray and Ben Bohorquez. Members of the creative team are scenic designer Bob Lavallee (DTC:Clybourne Park, Red, Cabaret); costume designer Wade Laboissonniere (DTC: Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat®, The Wiz); lighting designer Jaymi Lee Smith (DTC: The Wiz); sound designer Zach Williamson (DTC: Fly By Night); and wig designer Cookie Jordan (Broadway: After Midnight; DTC: The Wiz).
