Dallas Theater Center presents Tigers Be Still in the Studio Theatre at the Dee and Charles Wyly Theatre at the AT&T Performing Arts Center March 2 – May 13, 2012. Hal Brooks returns to DTC to direct the play, which stars DTC Brierley Resident Acting Company members Abbey Siegworth and Chamblee Ferguson.
"Tigers Be Still is a play full of quirky humor, but still manages to possess a sense of heart that has the ability to engage audiences in a thoughtful way," says director Hal Brooks. "Kim Rosenstock has written a play with fresh and recognizable characters. There is a feeling that they are all broken, but it's balanced by the humor, and then pressurized by a circling and ominous danger – a tiger on the loose from the local zoo."
Tigers Be Still is a comedy about depression that follows Sherry Wickman, who has pledged to stop being a total disaster and get her life on track. After she lands a job as an art therapist and substitute teacher at a middle school, she seems to be headed in the right direction. But Sherry's attention is soon shifted to her newly un-engaged sister, who won't get off the couch or stop watching Top Gun over and over again; her mother, who only speaks to her on the phone – from the upstairs bedroom; and her new boss's son, who also happens to be her first therapy patient. And there is also the escaped tiger roaming around the neighborhood…
Resident Acting Company member Abbey Siegworth will play Sherry Wickman. Earlier this season, Siegworth appeared in DTC's productions of The Tempest (Miranda) and A Christmas Carol (Ghost of Christmas Past). An Alumnus of SMU's Meadows School of the Arts MFA acting program, Siegworth joined the Brierley Resident Acting Company at DTC during the fall of 2010 for a two-year residency. Fellow Acting Company member Chamblee Ferguson will play Joseph, Sherry's boss. Ferguson starred as Prospero in The Tempest this season and appeared in the 2010-2011 season's productions of Cabaret and A Christmas Carol.
Returning to Dallas Theater Center is SMU Meadows School of the Arts MFA acting student Aleisha Force as Grace. Audience members will remember Force from Fat Pig and The Shape of Things, both part of The Beauty Plays in DTC's inaugural season at the Dee and Charles Wyly Theatre. Making his DTC debut is Christopher Sykes as Zack. Sykes is a company member at Level Ground Arts.
Hal Brooks will direct Kim Rosenstock's Tigers Be Still. DTC audiences will remember Brooks as the director for the 2009 DTC production of Back Back Back. He is also known for his Off-Broadway productions of Will Eno's Thom Pain (based on nothing) and Nilaja Sun's No Child. Rosenstock is currently a staff writer on the Fox TV series New Girl.
Joining Brooks are scenic designer John Arnone (Dividing the Estate, In the Beginning); costume designer Claudia Stephens (Dividing the Estate, A Midsummer Night's Dream); lightning designer Seth Reiser, who is making his DTC debut; and sound designer Ryan Rumery (The Who's Tommy, Back Back Back).
"With this production of Tigers Be Still, DTC is proud to introduce North Texas audiences to the voice of a new writer, Kim Rosenstock, with whom DTC will be collaborating on several future projects, including a new play," says DTC Artistic Director Kevin Moriarty. "We're also thrilled to utilize the intimate space of the Studio Theatre at the Wyly, which allows our audience an intimate proximity to the actors, creating a unique theatrical experience."
