"I have loved The Wiz since childhood. The exuberant songs and excitement of the story provide a wonderful opportunity for theatricality on a grand scale. Incorporating the element of dance into the story-telling will only heighten the magic of the production." says Moriarty. "This collaboration will provide our audience with a unique and truly unforgettable theater-going experience, while also furthering DTC's commitment to engage with our community in new and stimulating ways."The Wiz is a musical re-telling of L. Frank Baum's The Wonderful Wizard of Oz and in 1975. It premiered on Broadway in 1975 and won seven Tony Awards, including Best Musical. In this eye-popping, high-energy family hit, Dorothy, a teenage girl, is swept away by a tornado to the magical Land of Oz. There she befriends a Scarecrow, Tinman and Lion and learns there is no place like home.
In addition to the beloved, classic characters, catchy songs and dazzling dancing, DTC patrons will see the Wyly Theatre's Potter Rose Performance Hall transformed into a new world - some of the seating will move several times during the course of the production. Moriarty's vision to transport theater-goers to the Land of Oz involves 12 movable seating "pods" that will be pushed, pulled and twisted into various seating configurations by dancers and stage hands at key points of the play. Though not all seats in the theater move, the configurations are designed to incorporate stationary seats by refocusing the action and moving the action closer to the audience."There is a real sense of magic in this story. I wanted to make sure we brought as much of that magic as possible to the audience, which means providing a viewing experience unlike anything our patrons have experienced before at," says Moriarty. "Our production team has done a magnificent job creating movable seating elements that are fun and safe and will be talked about long after people leave the theater."
Christopher Huggins worked closely with Moriarty and the production team to choreograph remarkable numbers that incorporate as much of the changing performance space as possible. Huggins, who works around the world as a master teacher and choreographer, makes his Dallas Theater Center and musical theater debut with The Wiz."Kevin Moriarty's vision for this production was so clear and precise that it gave me the tools to create musical tabloids that did not deviate far from my concert dance roots," says Huggins. "The Wiz was created in 1974 - the disco era. The dance transcends this era with Kevin's vision. The tornado is like a ballet you would see on the concert dance stage. This is not your typical musical theater production and I am ecstatic to be a part of the vision Kevin afforded me."Leading the cast as they "Ease on Down the Road" to Oz is Trisha Jeffrey as Dorothy. Joining her on the Yellow Brick Road are James Tyrone Lane as Scarecrow, Sydney James Harcourt as Tinman and David Ryan Smith as Lion. Dallas Theater Center Brierley Resident Acting Company members Hassan El-Amin and Liz Mikel take the stage as Uncle Henry/the Wiz and Addaperle/Evillene. The group is joined by Dallas actress Denise Lee as Aunt Em/Glenda.
