As a resident company of the AT&T Performing Arts Center, Dallas Theater Center is proud to announce Artistic Director Kevin Moriarty directs A Midsummer Night's Dream by William Shakespeare, running Oct. 24-Nov. 22, as the inaugural production of the 2009-2010 season in DTC's new home, the Dee and Charles Wyly Theatre.
The Wyly Theatre will be brought to life when Shakespeare's lovesick characters plunge into a fairy-filled forest and fall under the enchantments of the mischievous Puck. Filled with witty dialogue, colorful characters, contemporary pop music and colorful design, DTC's fresh interpretation of Shakespeare's most beloved romantic comedy is a vibrant and funny approach to the familiar story of the pursuit of love and the entanglements that follow.
"A Midsummer Night's Dream is one of the most beloved plays ever written in the English language," said Moriarty. "In this great play, Shakespeare portrays the youthful thrill of the pursuit of love, and the joy of finding that love." "A Midsummer Night's Dream is also a celebration of the power of theater and the perfect play to open DTC's new house, the Dee and Charles Wyly Theatre. The performance itself will include a party in the play, to celebrate this momentous occasion of moving into our new home in the Arts District and the uniting of Dallas' major arts organizations!"
Featuring all actors from the Metroplex, the cast includes DTC Resident Acting Company members Cedric Neal (Puck); Liz Mikel (Titania); Lee Trull (Lysander) Chamblee Ferguson (Nick Bottom); and Sally Nystuen Vahle (Hippolyta). Also joining DTC for the opening production of the 2009-10 season are Robyn Baker Flatt (Egeus); Marcus M. Mauldin (Francis Flute); Joe Nemmers (Peter Quince); Bryan Pitts (Theseus); and Matthew Steven Tompkins (Oberon). Southern Methodist University Meadows School of the Arts students include Rukhmani K. Desai (Hermia); Dexter Hostetter (A Fairy); Cameron Leighton Kirkpatrick (Tom Snout); Abbey Siegworth (Helena); and Matt Tallman (Demetrius). Rounding out the cast are Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts students Mallory Brophy (Peaselblossom); Alexander Ferguson (Mustardseed); Josh Greenfield (Snug); Amber Pickens (Moth); and Sir Young (Cobweb).
"We want to share our new home in the Wyly theatre with all of Dallas. Our commitment to producing energetic, expansive, one-of-a-kind productions for audiences who represent a vibrant and diverse cross-section of Dallas is deeper than ever, as is our commitment to collaborating with artists and arts organizations throughout the Arts District and our entire community," Moriarty said. "This production celebrates the talents of our Resident Acting Company and so many other talented Dallas theater artists, as well as DTC's deep, ongoing partnerships with other SMU's Meadows School of the Arts and Booker T. Washington High School. We are proud to serve as a training ground and artistic incubator for young artists to provide them opportunities to gain experience alongside seasoned theater professionals."
The acclaimed design team for A Midsummer Night's Dream includes scenic design by Beowulf Boritt (Broadway: The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee; Rock of Ages. DTC's The Who's Tommy), Claudia Stephens (SMU faculty member and DTC's Back Back Back), lighting design by Tyler Micoleau (DTC's The Who's Tommy), and sound design by The Broken Chord Collective (DTC's The Good Negro).
