On the heels of a successful re-mount of THE BOXER, Bootstraps Comedy Theater continues to experiment with alternative theatrical experiences. In a Southern City is a radio variety show recorded in front of a live studio audience and features comedy, storytelling, and live music.

Four writers, six actors, a host, a house band and a foley artist will explore the theme of "Home" in a new show to be recorded at 8 p.m. on September 23, 2017 at Arts Mission Oak Cliff as a pilot for future radio play. Admission is FREE.

"I'm a huge fan of the history of radio entertainment. From Jack Benny to Prairie Home Companion to WIT. I also love being in a small room with great musicians. I think the form lends itself to showcasing the talent we're so lucky to have in North Texas." said Bootstraps Artistic Director and playwright Matt Lyle.

Deftly guiding the audience through the evening will be Dallas comedy staple, Jim Keunzer serving as host. By his side, leading the house band will be Max Hartman, Kitchen Dog Theater Company Member and lead singer songwriter of the popular Dallas band, Mur. The ensemble includes Cori Martin, Kristin McCollum, Jeff Swearingen, Jessica Turner, and Jeremy Whiteker.

"This is like a supergroup of Dallas talent. It's like seeing Asia but for the laughs and not the 30-minute long keyboard solos. Matt has pulled together some of the finest talent in town," Keunzer said.

The sketches and stories featured on In a Southern City are being created from scratch in the month prior to the performance by the writing team of Lyle, Keunzer, Swearingen, Janielle Kastner, and Brigham Moseley making for fresh, immediate storytelling.

"Jim, Jeff, and I are lucky to be working with young, creative writers with great futures like Janielle and Brigham since we're old guys just trying to hang on to any semblance of relevance," Lyle said.

Arts Mission Oak Cliff, the newly opened performance, education and co-working space houses the premiere performance. Admission is free and patrons are encouraged to bring their own beverages to emphasize a lively casual atmosphere for the studio audience.

"Arts Mission Oak Cliff is an incubator for new local performances, a sanctuary to try new and inventive ways to engage and entertain our community. Then hopefully launching these companies, artists, new works like In a Southern City into more exposure," said Anastasia Munoz, Founding Director of Arts Mission Oak Cliff.

In a Southern City is made possible by a Special Support Grant from the City of Dallas Office of Cultural Affairs.
