Blacken Blues Theater Presents BIRMINGHAM IS STILL BURNING... BUT SO IS AMERICA Image

The American pie has limited slices. So we determine who gets what based on racism, sexism, classism or any other ism that breeds social oppression. Self preservation subjugates our humanity for the sake of survival. And the pursuit of the American dream causes us to live on the periphery of morality. The Conscious Theater Project is a series of plays written by award winning playwright and social activist Willie Holmes. Holmes explains, "Each work explores the moral dilemma of a democratic society without social empathy.

"Birmingham Still Burning" tells the story of Jake Cambridge (Selmore Haines, III), a wealthy businessman who supports a controversial political position that betrays a generation of African American youths. The story takes an awkward twist when his daughter (Brittaineee' Francas' Hearne) returns home to quench an unnatural thirst. The play weaves in and out of moral consciousness while being chased by the daunting question, "does money really set you free?"

Fresh from his performance as "Thurgood Marshall," a one man show that earned him a nomination for the Irma P Hall Award, the DFW Theater Critics Award and the Broadway World Regional Theater Award, Mr. Haines was eager to jump into the role. "The issues addressed are universal and transcend race. They reflect the political dysfunction of today," said Haynes. "The unexpected twist may cause some to squirm. I'm excited to be part of the production."

The play is produced by Blacken Blues Theater of African-American Life (BBTAL), a nonprofit community theater that provokes critical thoughts on race, tolerance, and human dignity. By sharing the success and struggles of the African American experience, BBTAL hopes to raise the social conscious of society. All emerging artists regardless of race, gender, or ethnicity are invited to become part of the Blacken Blues experience.

The cast of "Birmingham Still Burning" consists of Selmore Haines, III (Jake Cambridge), Latricia Lindsey (Camille Cambridge), Britainnee' Francas' Hearne (Chyna Cambridge), Deonte' Thomas (Janae Cambridge), and Nicholas Williams (Bantu Tasami). Written and directed by Willie Holmes.

The play opens at the Addison Theater Centre located in Addison Texas. Performance dates are February 14th, 2019 through February 24th. Shows will be held on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday only. Show times: Friday and Saturday, 8:00 PM; Sunday 3:00 PM. Ticket prices: $15 - $20.
