Auditions Announced for THE GLASS MENAGERIE at The Firehouse Theatre ImageA small, African-American family lives in near-poverty in segregated, Depression-era St. Louis, MO. The sound of jazz/blues fill the air like memories of the Father/Husband who no longer provides for them. The son, Tom, and the mother, Amanda continually aggravate each other despite their apparent familial love. The daughter, Laura, proves incapable of living a normal life outside the safety of their small apartment. The need to provide for Laura becomes an all-consuming mission that finds its potential resolution in Jim, an all-too average young white man who unwittingly finds himself carrying the hopes and dreams of every character in the play.

Characters:
Tom - Male - 18-35 - Poetic and contemplative. Intellectual and reserved. Feels trapped and that he is wasting his talent and youth. Seeking his rainbow.

Amanda - Female - 35-60 - Constantly aggravating or intimidating her children, but only conscious of her love, devotion, and best intentions. Southern Lady through and through.

Laura - Female - 18-35 - Painfully shy and withdrawn. The least verbal character, Laura nonetheless is the most involved character in the entire show. She hears and responds to everything, even if the other characters do not notice. Emotional and/or physical disability.

Jim - Male - 18-35 - "A nice, ordinary young man." This gentleman caller could be a hero were he not so in love with the sound of his own voice. Why did Tom invite him over...for Laura or him?

Director's Note:
This production seeks to use research on the segregation of post-depression St. Louis, MO, the presence of jazz & blues, the existence of queer spaces along those racial boundaries, the struggle of those in poverty to advance, and the efficacy of dreams & memories to create a story that is universal by being hyper focused on this African-American family. Displaced from their home in the South, foreigners in their own country, and left without their patriarch, what will a family do to succeed?
