The POW and the Girl is a new dramatic play set in London in the 1980s, but the story has its deep roots in the Japanese Changi Prison in World War II.Based in part on a true story, Katrina (Herbert) Wood writes of her relationship with her father, British character actor Percy Herbert, who was imprisoned as a POW in Changi (known as the 'Death Camp' for the thousands of soldiers whose lives were lost building the railway). While there, Herbert was assigned with many British and Australian & US soldiers to build the bridge on the River Kwai & the notorious Burma Railway.(Ironically, after the war one of his first roles in Percy Herberts extensive acting career was in the Oscar winning movie The Bridge on the River Kwai.)In The POW and the Girl, Wood tells of a grandfather, the POW, who survived the notorious prison and is now living with his granddaughter, the Girl, a vivacious and sensitive college student in northern London. Its the 1980s, a time of fast-moving change in Britain! Video games and punk rock have revolutionized pop culture. Women have made their way into the work force in great numbers, notably strong-willed Margaret Thatcher, who has taken the helm of the United Kingdom. Despite the change of modernization in the 80s, mental health treatment remains in its adolescence. Haunted by memories of the war, the POW exhibits classic symptoms of PTSD. Grappling with demons, plus the responsibility of supporting his granddaughter, the POW remains embittered.
