You can turn on the television right now to watch reality dance contestants perform a series of acrobatic tricks and turns set to lyrical pop music and call it "Contemporary Dance," but has it lost its meaning. Boroka Nagy and her dance troupe work to keep contemporary dance relevant and in line with her company's vision: a visceral, human, and empathetic form of expression.
Re:borN Dance Interactive announced they will present their second evening-length dance concert on Friday, September 14th at 8pm in Brea's Curtis Theatre. The full program features ten professional contemporary dancers, with distinctive, theatrical modern dance choreography by Boroka Nagy, Re:borN's Artistic Director.
Re:borN Dance Interactive, a contemporary dance company and artist collective based in Southern California, was founded by Nagy in 2016. This upcoming evening's diverse works are from Nagy's repertory created between 2010-2018, including two premiers. Appropriately titled "TWO: Re:borN & You," the show's contemporary dance choreography explores a wide array of themes, including loss, community, family, and love. Nagy asks of audiences to "approach the work with the same connection as you would a conversation: looking at each dancer not as an unapproachable and distant creature, but rather as a friend revealing their genuine and vulnerable selves." Using music score ranging from dramatic German industrial rock to upbeat soulful vocals, Re:borN showcases professional dancers delving into complex characters and emotions that reflect Nagy's life experiences and observations.
Re:borN's first evening-length concert, "ONE," had a successful premiere in October 2017 in Los Angeles, California. Patrons who enjoyed "ONE" were able to walk through a large space as the performers danced and create their own perspectives and experience of the concert. Moments of interaction between performer and spectator were powerful and created a truly unique experience based on the audience's choices. "TWO: Re:borN & You" will not be presented in this Interactive Performance Exhibition style, rather as a traditional proscenium presentation to maintain the integrity of how Nagy's older repertory were meant to be performed, and to challenge the dancers and audience to stay equally engaged and committed to the works through identity and memory associations.
Re:borN's mission is to create art that exists as a social and emotional exchange between participants. The company aims to create events that take you on a journey through physical and emotional time and space, with interactive dance events that become community and identity building experiences.
