Santa Ana College Department of Theatre Arts (SACTA) presents the first production of its 2017/2018 season, Heathers: The Musical by Laurence O'Keefe and Kevin Murphy, directed by Chris Cannon.
Heathers: The Musical is a rock musical based on the 1988 cult film, Heathers. The dark comedy deals with issues of teen suicide, murder, bullying, homophobia, and gun violence. It has since become massively popular on various social media outlets.
Director, Chris Cannon says, "Heathers could be considered controversial to be sure, but I think it's fascinating that the show's popularity did not originate from its critics or its controversial themes, but from the audiences that have become enthralled with its comedic spin on teenage angst. The popularity of the show could indicate a need to release feelings of injustice and rage through humor. We live in challenging times that are unprecedented. There is a lot fear out there coupled with a desire for change through rebellion. Heathers deals with this reality by allowing the audience to embrace dark themes such as mayhem, teen suicide and violence through an irreverent yet entertaining score and a nostalgic homage to the decade that embodied social class frustration and rebellion."
