SCR's Season to Include PRIDE AND PREJUDICE, HOW THE WORLD BEGAN, & More

South Coast Repertory's 48th season will offer audiences an exciting blend of new plays and modern-day classics. The season begins with an adaptation of Jane Austen's beloved Pride and Prejudice and will include works from some of theatre's master craftsmen: Horton Foote's touching The Trip to Bountiful, August Wilson's powerful Jitney, Donald Margulies' stimulating Sight Unseen and Suzan-Lori Park's gripping Topdog/Underdog. The new work includes the Southland debut of Molly Smith Metzler's comedy of class, Elemeno Pea, and the world premieres of three plays read at this year's Pacific Playwrights Festival: Catherine Trieschmann's pressure-cooker drama How the World Began, Steven Drukman's family comedy The Prince of Atlantis and Octavio Solis and Adam Gwon's emotional chamber musical, Cloudlands.

The 2011-12 season was chosen jointly by SCR's new Artistic Director Marc Masterson and Founding Artistic Directors David Emmes and Martin Benson.

"This season's selections are strikingly varied," said Masterson. "The plays we chose reflect the breadth of the theatrical world. They include comedies and dramas, casts of two and 22, straight plays and musicals, in settings as diverse as Kansas and London. The roster of playwrights includes some who are just starting out and others with Pulitzer Prizes under their belts. We believe these nine plays come together to make one terrific season."

The 2011-2012 season will also include the 32nd rendition of holiday favorite A Christmas Carol, starring Hal Landon, Jr., Nov. 26 through Dec. 24.

Also on tap is the 15th annual Pacific Playwrights Festival, one of the preeminent festivals of new plays in the United States. The festival, which features five staged readings and two full productions, will take place April 27 - 29, 2012.

And SCR's Theatre for Young Audiences season features three lively and colorful productions for the entire family, including the SCR-commissioned musical Jane of the Jungle and the return of the popular Junie B. Jones.

Season tickets are currently available by subscription only, and may be purchased online at www.scr.org, by phone at (714) 708-5555 or in person at the SCR box office. Packages range from $42 to $495. Single tickets will be available to the public on August 7.
