South Coast Repertory turns classic fairy tales inside out for the season's final Theatre for Young Audiences production: The Stinky Cheese Man and Other Fairly Stupid Tales. John Glore adapted the play from the book by Jon Scieszka and Lane Smith. The show, with a host of wacky characters and silly songs, is directed by Jessica Kubzansky and runs May 23-June 8 on the Julianne Argyros Stage. Tickets are available online at www.scr.org.

The Stinky Cheese Man and Other Fairly Stupid Tales is based on an award-winning 1992 book of the same name. Jack, of "beanstalk" fame, is the narrator, but he can't get all the fairy tale characters on the same page. Among the ridiculous tales he tells are "The Princess and the Bowling Ball," "Little Red Running Shorts" and "The Tortoise and the Hair."

Playwright Glore, SCR's associate artistic director, is an award-winning playwright whose produced plays include On the Jump, The Company of Heaven, City Sky, Wind of a Thousand Tales, Folktales Too, Rhubarb Jam, The Day After Evermore and an adaptation of The Night Fairy by Laura Amy Schlitz, which premiered at SCR in 2013. His adaptation of Madeleine L'Engle's A Wrinkle in Time, which debuted at SCR in 2010, has had more than a dozen productions nationwide.

Author Jon Scieszka is the National Ambassador for Children's Literature emeritus and the bestselling author of more than 25 books for kids, including Math Curse, Robot Zot!, and the Time Warp Trio series. Lane Smith has written and illustrated numerous books. Most recently Grandpa Green, which was a 2012 Caldecott Honor book, and It's a Book which was on the New York Times bestseller list for over six months and has been translated into over 20 languages.

The cast for The Stinky Cheese Man includes Larry Bates, Brad Culver, Tracey A. Leigh, Matt McGrath, Nick Mongiardo-Cooper, Amanda Pajer and Erika Schindele.

The design and creative team includes Tim Horrigan, musical director; Susan Gratch, scenic design; Ann Closs-Farley, costume design; Jaymi Smith, lighting design; Vincent Olivieri, sound design; Joshua Marchesi, production manager; and Jennifer Ellen Butler, stage manager.

The Stinky Cheese Man is generously supported by Corporate Honorary Producer Pacific Life.
