South Coast Repertory concludes the 2017-18 Theatre for Young Audiences series with Amos & Boris, adapted from the classic children's book by William Steig. This theatrical retelling has been adapted for the stage by Sofia Alvarez with music and additional lyrics by Daniel Roland Tierney. The world premiere will be directed by Jessica Kubzansky on the Julianne Argyros Stage, May 19-June 3. Tickets are available now at www.scr.org.

"What's so exciting about the privilege of directing this new young audiences work are the production puzzles that need to be solved to make the musical as exciting a thrill-ride as possible," said Kubzansky.

The tale starts and ends in Mouse Town, with an adventure in between. Alvarez has written what's described as a "fun, funny and funky musical that teaches lessons about being yourself and the enduring power of friendship."

Kubzansky sees the story of Amos & Boris as a hero's journey.

"An adventurous mouse named Amos, who feels like a misfit in Mouse Town and yearns to go to sea, builds a boat, sets sail and meets many fascinating sea creatures. But when his boat disappears, he is rescued by a whale named Boris, who becomes a firm friend" she said.

"Like all heroes who eventually find their way back home, Amos begins yearning for the beauties of the land, specifically Mouse Town. Amos and Boris believe they'll never see each other again, but their friendship has more in store" she said.

The cast includes Preston Butler III, Matthew Hancock, Doug Harvey, Michael Manuel, Maegan McConnell, Ella Saldana North and Joshua Wolf Colman.

The design and creative team includes François-Pierre Couture, scenic design; Denitsa Bliznakova, costume design; Rose Malone, lighting design; John Nabori, sound design; Deborah Wicks La Puma, music direction; Susan Gratch, puppets; and Joanne DeNaut, CSA, casting. The production manager is Joshua Marchesi and the stage manager is Kathryn Davies. The dramaturg is Kimberly Colburn.
