South Coast Repertory has announced its summer shows May 2012 – August 2012, including August Wilson's Jitney, Snow Angel by David Lindsay-Abaire and more. See details below.

MAY 2012

May 11 – June 10 - Segerstrom Stage

JITNEY

by August Wilson

directed by Ron OJ Parson

Cheering audiences rose to their feet and critics throughout the Southland spun superlatives as the curtain fell on Fences, but that was only the beginning for SCR and August Wilson. Now it's the 1970s, and urban renewal threatens a storefront station, where the drivers of gypsy cabs (known as jitneys) share their funny stories about the day's fares and meddle in each other's lives. Cronies drop in, fights break out, a son faces his father after 20 years in prison, lovers make up, and just as we get to know them, Wilson asks us to look again.

Tickets: $20-68. See below for performance times.

May 19 – 27 - Nicholas Studio - Teen Players Production

SNOW ANGEL

by David Lindsay-Abaire

directed by Hisa Takakuwa

Don't miss this play by one of America's finest writers and a recent Pulitzer Prize-winner, David Lindsay-Abaire. It begins when the worst blizzard in 200 years hits the town of Deerpoint, Vermont. Schools are closed! That's great news for a group of high school students-until a mysterious girl named Eva steps from a snowbank and into their lives. In their funny and often fractious attempts to solve the mystery of Eva's identity, the kids find new ways to understand themselves and deal with the pressures of teenaged angst. Talented young actors, who have completed at least two years of training and auditioned to join the SCR Teen Players, will take the stage in this wonderful play about the power of believing.

Tickets: $10. See below for performance times.

May 25 – June 10 - Julianne Argyros Stage

JANE OF THE JUNGLE

book and lyrics by Karen Zacarias

music by Deborah Wicks La Puma

directed by Juliette Carillo

Jane is an ordinary suburban girl, complete with a really nice mom and a bratty little brother. But Jane is on the verge of some big changes. Middle school is looming, and that's both exciting and a little scary. And yet nothing compares with the jolt she gets when she wakes up one morning to discover she has acquired spots, furry ears and a tail! Not only that, but her neighborhood seems to be turning into a jungle! This delightfully inventive new musical takes a wild and wonderful approach to everything kids have to go through before they're truly "grown up."

Tickets: $20-$32. See below for performance times.

JUNE 2012

June 8 – 10 - Nicholas Studio - Part of Studio SCR*

Anton's Uncles

performed by Theatre Movement Bazaar

directed by Richard Alger

Anton's Uncles is a fresh, funny and physical look at Chekhov's Uncle Vanya. In this original work, only the men remain, wrestling with their desires and pressed to examine a life unlived. The Los Angeles based Theatre Movement Bazaar explores this classic play of lives unlived, merging the original text with new writing, movement, dancing and singing to emphasize the unspoken, unseen and unexpressed.

Tickets: $20-$35. (Performance times: June 8, 8 p.m.; June 9, 2 and 8 p.m.; June 10, 2 p.m.)

June 22 – 24 ? Nicholas Studio - Part of Studio SCR*

Cattywampus

performed by Transit Authority

written and directed by Robert Cucuzza

In this darkly comic reinvention of Strindberg's Miss Julie, writer/director Robert Cucuzza distills an essential tale of class and sexual power dynamics and transports it to modern-day Pittsburgh. Cattywampus traces the story of Julie as she tries to escape the clutch of her disinterested husband. She seduces an unsophisticated co-worker, Donnie, determined that he's her escape out of married misery, gambling it all on his cracked plan to relocate to Florida. But in a world that is so economically out-of-whack, she finds that her dreams of flight are no match for her predetermined fate.

Tickets: $20-$30. See below for performance times. (Performance times: June 22, 8 p.m.; June 23, 2 and 8 p.m.; June 24, 2 p.m.)
