The Huntington Beach Academy for the Performing Arts takes a path less traveled with its spring musical, "Jekyll & Hyde," a darker story set in 19th century London.
"Jekyll & Hyde" runs Friday, March 17 and Saturday, March 18 at 7:30 p.m., with a 2:00 p.m. matinee on Sunday, March 19. This schedule repeats the following weekend, March 24-26. The production is on the main stage in the Historic Huntington Beach Union High School District Auditorium and Bell Tower. Tickets are $22 for adults, $16 for students/seniors 65+ and can be purchased online at http://www.hbapa.org/see.
As for every show, the costume design is integral to the believability and quality of a production. The three team leads for the "Jekyll & Hyde" costume design effort have already spent at least 10 ½ hours on researching the era, show and preparation. They watched the musical online, read and annotated the script and spent the remainder of those hours brainstorming and sketching. When all is said and done, APA's costume department will have constructed or added to 40-50 costumes for this cast of 90+ members.
"It's our responsibility to maintain accuracy with the era's style, but also stay true to the musical itself," said one of the lead costume designers, Gianna Francisco. "There will be showgirl head pieces and lots of bustles, but we've yet to decide whether we have the time and resources to craft them ourselves."
"We teach our students to be mindful of expenses and realistic about time constraints so that they understand prioritization and time management," said costume design teacher, Courtney Gilio.
About Jekyll & Hyde
The epic struggle between good and evil comes to life on stage in the musical phenomenon, "Jekyll & Hyde." Based on the classic story by Robert Louis Stevenson, and featuring a thrilling score from multi-Grammy and Tony nominated Frank Wildhorn and double Oscar and Grammy-winning Leslie Bricusse, "Jekyll & Hyde" has mesmerized audiences the world over. An evocative tale of two men - one a doctor, passionate and romantic - the other, a terrifying madman, and two women - one beautiful and trusting - the other, beautiful and trusting only herself. Both women in love with the same man. Both unaware of his dark secret.
