How to be a Rock Critic

based on the writing of Lester Bangs

written by Jessica Blank and Erik Jensen

Manic. Impossibly creative. Dead of an overdose at 33. Lester Bangs was arguably America's greatest rock critic and the first to anoint the "punk" movement. His faith was shattered as the rebel ethos of the '70s gave way to the corporate pop of the '80s.Through his own words, this solo play sheds light on a groundbreaking, pioneering voice in music. This is co-production with Center Theatre Group (CTG).

Kikiricaja: Una Historia De Payasos

Loosely translated as Cock-a-doodle-doo Box: A History of Clowns, Kikiricaja: Una Historia de Payasos is a three-person play that tells the story of friends Bartolomeus and Comino, who live in beautiful wooden boxes where they dream, eat, play and invent worlds. Full of moments of happiness and sadness, fights and reconciliations, travel and adventure, this delightful piece shows how friendships can help us face the fears that make us feel small, and celebrate the hopes that make us feel like giants. The production is performed entirely in Spanish, but fluency in the language is not required to enjoy the show. Presented in association with La Jolla Playhouse. Recommended for ages 7 and above.

Tickets: Prices range $7-15; student, Teatro En Vivo and MyStage (ages 15-25) discounts are available.

Sept. 11-Oct. 11 ? Segerstrom Stage

One Man, Two Guvnors
by Richard Bean

based on The Servant of Two Masters by Carlo Goldoni

with songs by Grant Olding

directed by David Ivers

Gleeful critics have cheered from London ("deliriously daft and diabolically joke-stuffed"- Independent) to New York ("splendidly silly"-The New York Times) over this delicious farce set in swinging '60s Brighton. Francis, a failed washboard player with an insatiable appetite, finds himself in the employ of both Roscoe, who is really his own twin sister (in disguise), and Stanley, a well-bred twit (who actually killed the real Roscoe). And that's only the beginning! In this adaptation of The Servant of Two Masters, food flies, pants drop and madness abounds, to the tunes of a live band (minus its washboard). A co-production with Berkeley Repertory Theatre. Middle school and above. Contains occasional adult language and innuendo.

Tickets: Prices start at $22

Dates: Low-priced previews: Sept. 11-17; regular performances: September 19-Oct. 11.
