“Toxic” follows the intense and emotional journey of Chloe and David, a couple who share a seemingly strong bond. As they prepare for a night of clubbing, buried secrets emerge that lead to a vicious breakup on their way to the club. The two-part ways, each grappling with their own thoughts and emotions, only to realize that, despite their differences, they were better together than apart. The initial version of Toxic was presented as a short play titled Back Against the Sun during the 2024 NYC Summerfest in Manhattan. The play is centered around the complexities of a queer relationship, examining themes of love, secrecy, and personal growth. With its raw depiction of Chloe and David’s unraveling relationship, Toxic presents a powerful and provocative narrative, described by Dr. David Crespy, tenured MU theater professor and playwright, as “very John Waters-type theatre.” Playwright Bio Zachary J. Allen is an emerging playwright, director, and screenwriter currently pursuing a Master of Fine Arts in Film and Television Production at Sacred Heart University. Hailing from Columbia, Missouri, Zachary holds dual Bachelor of Arts degrees from the University of Missouri in Theatre (with a focus on writing for the stage) and Film Studies (with a focus on Film Production). Zachary's creative inspirations span across various mediums, influenced by notable figures such as Es Devlin, Martin McDonagh, and Paul Thomas Anderson. His work frequently delves into the nuances of human relationships, often portraying complex emotional journeys. Toxic began as a two-scene short, first performed at the NYC Summerfest 2024, and has since been expanded into a one-act play. Through Toxic, Zachary continues to explore the depths of queer relationships, highlighting the tension between love and hidden truths.
