The Glass Menagerie by Tennessee Williams is a memory play which takes place in 1937 St. Louis. Tom, who is both a character and narrator, is an aspiring writer and bread winner for his mother Amanda, his sister Laura and himself. Tom has ambitions of leaving to seek adventures. Amanda lives in the dreams of her own past as a charming southern belle. She desperately wants her terribly shy daughter Laura either to find a career or a man to marry and take care of her. Tom’s co-worker from the shoe factory is invited to dinner and welcomed as the long-awaited gentleman caller.
