Emerson Theater Collaborative ends their 10th season with a production of Connecticut playwright, Jacques Lamarre’s play BORN FAT, a comedy drama based on “the life, fat and triumph of Elizabeth Petruccione.” The production will be held at the First United Methodist Church, 23 Willow Street in Mystic, CT 06355. Performances run: Friday and Saturday, November 9 & November 10, 2018 at 7:00 p.m. and Sunday, November 11 at 2:00 p.m. BORN FAT is directed by Susan Hackett and produced by Lisa Giordano. The cast features Philadelphia actor, April Woodall who helped to define the role of Elizabeth on stages nationally. “’Critics have pronounced her “hilarious,” her interpretation and impersonation “definitive,” and that “her striking visage, broad animated body movement…convey, not only the extremities of the human voice, but more importantly, the dedication to her art."’ (The Syracuse Post Standard). BORN FAT won Best Solo Show in the 2016 Midtown International Theatre Festival in NYC.
“Elizabeth Anne, you were born fat!" With these words, spoken by her mother, Elizabeth is off and running on a lifetime of fad-diets, crashing weight loss, crushing failures, and binge eating. Her weight see-saws for decades between 150 and 250 pounds. In her 50s, Elizabeth decides to take control of her life, her weight, and her happiness. The audience joins our heroine for this rollercoaster ride that is part weight loss meeting, part confessional, and part tent revival only to find that joy can be found at any size. This solo show is small in scope, but enormously relevant in a world struggling with body image issues, eating disorders, and an obesity epidemic. Come be inspired!
Produced by special arrangement with Actors Equity Association.
