Milford Arts Council's New England Guitar Society will close out their 2017/2018 season with an annual showcase and fundraiser presented by the Yale School of Music Guitar Department. The event will be held at the MAC, 40 Railroad Avenue South in Milford on Friday, May 11th at 8pm. All proceeds will benefit the Milford Arts Council, a 501c3 non profit organization dedicated to fostering artistic, cultural, and educational opportunities for the benefit of the greater Milford community.
The Guitar Program at Yale School of Music, under the direction of renowned guitarist Benjamin Verdery, is one of the most respected guitar departments in the United States and the world. It offers a wide range of diplomas up to Doctor of Musical Arts, and Artist Diploma degrees. Professionals of the future from the Yale School will present solo and ensemble classical guitar works at the fundraiser concert. It is the perfect occasion to hear young stars right before they launch their careers.
The guitar program offers broad instruction with guitarists taking lessons, participating in weekly studio seminars, working with guest artists, and performing solo and ensemble repertoire. The weekly guitar seminar includes performances of newly learned solo and chamber music, as well as a variety of lectures. Topics include interpretation, arranging, technique, pedagogy, master class teaching, programming, memory, competitions, recording, and career development. Each year in the course, students are required to write an étude and an arrangement, as well as present a lecture of their own.
Before graduating, all guitar students perform a 20-minute outreach concert in New Haven schools. YSM students also have the opportunity to teach young musicians through the Music in Schools Initiative. Every semester features a guest master class. Recent artists have included Odair Assad, Eliot Fisk,
David Russell, SoloDuo, Los Angeles Guitar Quartet, Raphaella Smits, Roland Dyens, David Leisner,
Anthony Newman, and Hopkinson Smith.
There is a suggested donation of $20 for this performance which can be made on-line (click TICKET) at
