We have a very special ETC staged reading on December 18 - if you missed this 2008 Tony Award Nominee for "Best Play" in New York, now is your chance; and if you've seen The Seafarer before - this is the production to see again! Director Ruth Anne Baumgartner has rounded up some of the finest actors in FairfieldCounty (many familiar to WCT audiences) for this darkly funny, provocative evening.
The Seafarer, the 0most recent
Conor McPherson to take New York by storm, is set on Christmas Eve in north Dublin. The play presents a boozy night and a visit of... no, not Santa. Not by a long shot. Sharky Harkin, chronic knockabout, returns to visit his brother. Some old friends come by, the drinking starts, and Sharky finds himself playing cards with the devil. A wonderful achievement of character, plot, and atmosphere, the London Observer said of this play, "Succinct, startling and eerie, and the funniest McPherson play to date."
McPherson is a favorite playwright of the director; she directed the Connecticut première of The Weir, his tale of haunted souls revealed through Irish legends of fairies and ghosts; she has also directed a staged reading of his Shining City for both ETC at Westport Community Theatre and Bare Bones Theater at the Pequot Library. She says of The Seafarer, "It's funny, it's suspenseful, it's moving, and at last it will fill you with a strange and triumphant joy."
