WESTPORT COMMUNITY THEATRE Announces AUDITIONS for INSPECTING CAROL

By Daniel Sullivan & the Seattle Repertory Theatre Resident Company

Directed by David L. Jackins
Sunday, September 27** & Monday, September 28 at 7:00 PM
Westport Community Theatre
Westport Town Hall, 110 Myrtle Avenue, Westport, CT

A Christmas Carol meets Noises Off in this hilarious hit from Seattle. The play is set in a Midwestern regional theater where the play A Christmas Carol is put on every winter. The theatre company is struggling to meet cash flow as its federal funding is cut. A man who asks to audition is mistaken for an informer for the National Endowment for the Arts. Everyone caters to the bewildered wannabe actor and he is given a role in the current production, A Christmas Carol, in hopes that they can convince him that they deserve a grant. The theatre group finds themselves in a state of chaos as rehearsals have gone horribly wrong, the floor springs up, the walls collapse, and the actors can't act! All the while, the true governmental inspector shows up early.

Performances Dates: November 27 - December 13, 2009

Auditions will consist of cold readings from the script. Familiarity with the play is suggested.
All roles require strong comic timing and moments of broad physical comedy.

Zorah Bloch (40s): Founding Director of the Soapbox Playhouse; extremely self- concerned, she is vibrant & dynamic.

Sidney Carlton (60s): A founding member of the company; kind, but somewhat
addled.

Dorothy Tree Hapgood (60s): Sidney Carlton's wife; English, and unable to lose her
accent. A founding member.

Larry Vauxhall (40s): Tough, intellectually vain. Child of the 60s, still looking for a
turn-on. A founding member.Performs Scrooge. The actor performing
this role must be able to show considerable range.

Phil Hewlett (40s): Small, obsessive, usually plays the ineffectual character in any Soapbox production. A founding member. Performs Bob Cratchit.

Walter E. Parsons (30s): African-American in his 30s, has recently taken up acting
again after a stint in the armed forces. Good natured, excitable.

Luther Beatty (11): A large eleven-year-old, he has been playing Tiny Tim two years
too long. Extremely friendly.

Kevin Emery (40s): A nervous man in the impossible position of managing director.
Afraid of Zorah.

M.J. (Mary Jane) McMann (40s): A realist, smart and organized. She long ago
realized that the Company has hit bottom. She looks on now as a
bemused observer. A founding member.

Betty Andrews (40s): Pivotal character first introduced midway through the 2nd act.
An inspector for the National Endowment for the Arts; forbidding
appearance with bright red hair. Requires physical comedy skill.

Bart Frances: A pleasant youth. Dresses in a motorcycle jacket and torn jeans.

Wayne Wellacre (30s): In search of a new career in acting, has no training and less
talent. Affable and eager to please.
