The Warner Stage Company will bring the Tony Award-winning musical Gypsy to the Warner's main stage, tonight, May 12 through May 20.
Based loosely on the 1957 memoirs of striptease artist, Gypsy Rose Lee,Gypsy,the musicalwith music by Jule Styne and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, opened on Broadway May 21, 1959 starring Ethel Merman as Gypsy's mother, Rose. The play focuses on, Rose, whose name has become synonymous with "the ultimate show business mother. Rose is determined to break into the big time by pushing the vaudeville career of her younger daughter June. However, unwilling to tolerate her mother's manipulations, June elopes with a dancer. Rose then turns all of her attention on her older and less talented daughter Louise. Eventually Rose's dreams come to fruition when she successfully transforms Louise into a famous burlesque stripper known as Gypsy Rose Lee.The musical contains many songs that became popular standards, including "Small World," "Everything's Coming up Roses", "Some People", "Let Me Entertain You", and "Rose's Turn and has been referred to as "the greatest American musical" by numerous critics and writers.Videos
