TheaterWorks in Downtown Hartford opens its 2011-2012 Season with the United States Regional Theater Premiere of the comic smash, The Motherf----r with the Hat, by Stephen Adly Guirgis.

Incisive, cruel and very, very funny, The Motherf----r with the Hat is a hip, harsh romance about lifelong love and the addiction that threatens to ruin it. Whether it's drugs, alcohol, sex, love, or health food - this play's lively cast of characters is always looking for a fix!

"Hat is about growing up, accepting responsibility," playwright Stephen Adly Guirgis says. "All my plays ... are meditations about trying to put away my childish things."

Struggles with addiction, friendship, love and the challenges of adulthood are at the center of the story. Jackie, a petty dealer is just out of prison and trying to stay clean. He's also still in love with his coke-addicted childhood sweetheart, Veronica. Ralph D. is Jackie's too smooth, slightly slippery sponsor married to the bitter, disaffected Victoria who, by the way, has the hots for Jackie! And then there's Julio, Jackie's cousin... a stand-up, ‘stand by me' kind of guy.

"They are all clinging to the underside of the American Dream - when they're not actively sabotaging their own prospects." - The Wall Street Journal

A raw, wild comedy-drama, The Motherf----r with the Hat is fraught with character quirks and missteps that add up to a huge openhearted, laugh-out-loud, poignant play. This Tony Award nominated comedy, staged by acclaimed director Tazewell Thompson, runs October 14 through December 4, 2011.

The Motherf----r with the Hat features TheaterWorks favorite Royce Johnson (Broke-ology, God of Carnage) (Ralph) and newcomers Clea Alsip (Veronica), VarÍn Ayala (Cousin Julio), Ben Cole (Jackie) and Vanessa Wasche (Victoria).

The production's design team includes Donald Eastman (Sets), Harry Nadal (Costumes), Philip S. Rosenberg (Lights), and Fabian Obispo (Sound). Production Manager is Michael Lenaghan.
