There's nothing like escaping from the real world...just when we need it most! That's why the Windham Theatre Guild is staging a great get away show, with a Connecticut twist! It's the Main Stage production of The Game's Afoot by Ken Ludwig, winner of the 2012 Mystery Writers of America's Edgar Allen Poe Award for Best Play...opening Friday, November 4th at the Burton Leavitt Theatre. The Game's AFoot features Connecticut's own William Gillette, best remembered as the first actor to be universally acclaimed for portraying Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's famed detective Sherlock Holmes, a role Gillette first played on stage in 1899 and continued for more than 35 years.
It is December 1936 and Broadway star William Gillette, admired the world over for his leading role in the play Sherlock Holmes, has invited his fellow cast-members to Gillette Castle in Connecticut for a weekend of revelry. But when one of the guests is stabbed to death, the festivities in this isolated house of tricks and mirrors quickly turn dangerous. Then it's up to Gillette himself, as he assumes the persona of his beloved Holmes, to track down the killer before the next victim appears. The danger and hilarity are non-stop in this glittering whodunit set during the Christmas holidays. From the intriguing opening mini play within a play to the surprise last scene a split second before final curtain, The Game's Afoot gives you everything you love about great Live Theatre.
Eight talented local actors, under the direction of Victor Funderburk and Michele Hettinger, will bring William Gillette and his friends to life for two weekends in November on the stage that will be transformed into Connecticut's very own Gillette's Castle.
