The Raymond and Beverly Sackler Artist-in-Residence Program for the Advancement of the Arts
Recognized for its virtuosity, exuberant style, and often daring repertory, the Pacifica Quartet has carved out a compelling musical path. That path leads directly to UConn's Jorgensen Center for the Performing Arts on Tuesday, November 17, at 7:30 pm, with a concert talk at 6:45. Winner of this year's Grammy Award for Best Chamber Music Performance and named 2009 Ensemble of the Year by Musical America, the Pacifica Quartet has also won an Avery Fisher Career Grant and other prestigious music awards.
The Pacifica Quartet was instrumental in creating the innovative Music Integration
Project that provides performances and teacher training to inner-city elementary schools. Members regularly teach and perform at summer festivals and have toured throughout the U.S., Europe, Asia, and Australia and can also be heard regularly on classical music radio broadcasts. Their CDs have attracted effusive praise from critics at home and abroad, including a cover photo for Gramophone magazine. The New York Times called Pacifica's performances "astounding," and the Chicago Tribune praised its "astonishing talent, energy and dedication."
The members of the Pacifica Quartet serve as Faculty Quartet in Residence at the
University of Illinois and are also resident performing artists at the University of
Chicago and Boston's Longy School of Music. They are frequently invited for visiting residencies nationwide, and are leading eight master classes at UConn on November 16 and 17 at the University of Connecticut School of Fine Arts as part of the Raymond and Beverly Sackler Artist-in-Residence Program for the Advancement of the Arts.
The members of the Pacifica Quartet (violinists Simin Ganatra and Sibbi Bernhardsson, cellist Brandon Vamos, and violist Masumi Per Rostad) are adept at split-second timing, without sacrificing intricate interpretation, tonal balance, or unity of artistic purpose. They will be joined in the performance by UConn's own internationally recognized cellist Kangho Lee. The program will include Haydn's Quartet in D Major, Op. 64, No. 5 ("The Lark"); Prokofiev's Quartet in D Major, Op. 92; and Schubert's Cello Quintet in C Major, Op. 163, D. 956.
