The Hartt School Community Division is pleased to offer a wide range of summer programs. Options are available for students of all ages and levels of ability, from pre-school to adults, and from beginning to intermediate and advanced instrumentalists, vocalists, and dancers. Full Force Dance Theatre Summer Intensive for Dancers 16 and older
July 5-16, 2010
All classes held at the Mort and Irma Handel Performing Arts Center, 35 Westbourne Parkway, Hartford

This program, offered in partnership with The Hartt School's resident dance company, features local and guest faculty, diverse training, individual attention and a unique and intense experi­ence in modern dance. It is valuable training for the professionally-bound dancer as well as a refreshing change of pace for the returning professional or teacher. Dancers should be at least 16 years old, should be currently training and should have a strong foundation in ballet and/or modern technique.

Summer Tune-Up for Grades 3-7
July 6-9, 8:30 AM to 5:30 PM
The Hartt School, 200 Bloomfield Avenue, West Hartford

This program builds musical skill while offering flexibility to explore other art forms. The program is open to students with at least one year of study on his or her instrument; singers are welcome without past experience. In addition to instrumental study, students will participate in theatre, chorus, and dance/movement classes. Daily activities will be tailored to meet the needs of students with varying levels of experience.

Performing Arts Primer for Grades 1-5
July 12-16, from 8:30 AM to 5:30 PM
The Hartt School, 200 Bloomfield Avenue, West Hartford

Especially designed for elementary-aged students, grades 1-5, participants will take classes in dance/movement, theatre, choir, piano, and recorder. Students in grades 3-5 also will learn to create sound on wind & string instruments so they are prepared to choose an instrument to play as they grow older.

Musical Fun in the Sun!
July 12-16, 8:30 AM-12 PM, Simsmore Square, Simsbury
August 2-6, 8:30 AM-12 PM, The Hartt School, West Hartford

This new beach-themed Music & Movement Class is for little ones from birth to age 5 and their parents! Music & Movement Classes are based on the acclaimed First Steps in Music curriculum.

Ballet Tech Camp for Ages 9 - 15
Session I: July 12-16, 9:00 AM-5:00 PM
Session II: July 19-23, 9:00 AM-5:00 PM
Simsmore Square, Simsbury

This two-week program is designed to train the serious young dancer, ages 9-15 (age 9 by the start of the program). The camp provides a foundation in solid ballet technique and educates students on a variety of dance forms and related skills necessary to become a well-rounded artist. Classes include ballet, pointe, pre-pointe, modern, and jazz. Students need to attend both weeks in order to perform in the camp's final performance.

Children's Ballet Workshops for Ages 5 - 8
August 2-6, 8:30 AM-11:30 AM
Mort and Irma Handel Performing Arts Center, 35 Westbourne Parkway, Hartford

This workshop is tailored to children ages 5-8 (age 5 by the start of the program) engaging their natural energy and expressiveness toward ‘classical ballet'. Activities include creative movement, ballet, multi-cultural and choreographed dances, related arts and crafts, and a studio performance.

High School Intensive Instrumental Workshop
July 26-30, 8:30 AM-5:30 PM
The Hartt School, 200 Bloomfield Avenue, West Hartford

Instrument-specific workshops include flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, horn, low brass, violin/viola, and cello. Additional classes include music writing, music history, beginning improvisation, chorus, and more.

Hartt Suzuki Institute and Teacher Workshops
Activities held July 31-August 8
The Hartt School, 200 Bloomfield Avenue, West Hartford

The Hartt Suzuki Institute is designed to offer music students, families, and teachers the opportunity for concentrated study of repertory, philosophy, and methods introduced by the respected Japanese educator Shinichi Suzuki. The institute provides private and group experiences taught by some of the best Suzuki teachers from around the country. The 2010 Hartt Suzuki Student Institute is designed for violin, viola, cello, guitar, and piano students. Students currently must be studying with a Suzuki-trained teacher.

Hartt Summer Band & Orchestra Festival for Grades 8 - 12
August 9-13, from 8:30 AM to 5:30 PM
The Hartt School, 200 Bloomfield Avenue, West Hartford

The Hartt Summer Band and Orchestra Festival helps students to refine ensemble skills including balance, blend, style, tone, intonation, and articulation, as well as individual instrumental techniques. Conductors Alan Francis and Emmet Drake will lead the Festival Strings and Winds in the study and performance of challenging repertoire in this week long program for instrumentalists in grades 8-12 (including recent graduates).

Summer Vocal Institute: ChoralFest (Ages 14 and older)
August 14-15 (Full Day)
The Hartt School, 200 Bloomfield Avenue, West Hartford

Participants will experience a diverse two-day intensive choral festival at the beautiful campus of The Hartt School of the University of Hartford. The program will focus on the rehearsal and performance of Brahms' Nänie and Bach's motet Jesu, meine Freude. Participants will enjoy the social company of fellow singers, as well as the professional and energetic leadership of conductors Jack Pott and Noah Glynn. Additionally, participants will experience an in depth review of the historical significance and relationship of these works and the composers, while working with stellar musicians to achieve the best-possible performance.

Middle School Intensive Instrumental Workshop
August 16-20, from 8:30 AM to 5:30 PM.

Students with at least two yeas of experience on their instruments will enjoy a comprehensive music program that combines the performing arts with summer fun! Workshops for flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, horn, low brass, violin/viola, and cello will focus on specific skills, techniques, repertoire, and ensembles.
