On Wednesday, December 16, TheatreWorks New Milford will present a free staged reading of THE SERVANT by Robin Maugham, at 8:00 pm, at the Theatre, 5 Brookside Ave, in New Milford. The reading will be followed by a wine and cheese reception.

Despite being written in 1963 by Robin Maugham, nephew of the famous W. Somerset Maugham, THE SERVANT has never been performed on stage in America. Out of print for decades, TheatreWorks has been granted special access to the script by Oxford University. The play takes a sharp look at British class relations through a dramatic turning of the tables between "Oxbridge" bachelor, Tony and his contemptuous manservant, Barrett. As Barrett slowly realizes and exploits his expanding powers over his "master," Tony steadily loses his authority and becomes enslaved by his own employee. Maugham's sharp wit helps to create a chilling and tightly-woven psychological drama about the intricacies of class and servitude.

In 1963, THE SERVANT was also adapted into an award-winning film by playwright Harold Pinter, starring Sarah Miles, James Fox, and Dirk Bogarde.

The cast includes Jeremiah Maestas (New York City), KC and Jonathan Ross (Thomaston), and Jessica Stewart, William Hughes, and Vicki Sosbe (all New Milford).

THE SERVANT is under the direction of Jane Farnol of Gaylordsville.

The event is free, but reservations must be made by calling (860) 350-6863 or by visiting the website at WWW.THEATREWORKS.US.

TheatreWorks is an award-winning, professional non-Equity theatre company located on 5 Brookside Avenue, just off Route 202 (next to the CVS), in New Milford, CT.
