THE RIVER Comes to TheaterWorks

On a moonless night in August when the sea trout are ready to run, a man brings his new girlfriend to the remote family cabin where he has come to fly-fish since he was a boy. But she's not the only woman he has brought here - or indeed the last. Seductive, chilling and poetic, THE RIVER asks: when we find each other, are we trying to recapture someone we once lost?

THE RIVER directed by Rob Ruggiero will run October 4 through November 11, 2018. Rob said "I have wanted to direct THE RIVER for some time. I saw it on Broadway with Hugh Jackman and was mesmerized by the story. The loss and longing lingered with me far past my experience in the theater. I love the poetry and humanity of this work. And I am intrigued by the man's desire to recapture something that has vanished. I am no fisherman, but the visceral nature of baiting and hooking, catching and releasing - the push and pull within the act was enthralling both on the stage, and in the beauty of Jez Butterworth's written words."

Butterworth's THE RIVER ran first in London and then New York in 2014. His next play The Ferryman opens this October on Broadway. Seasoned theatergoers will also remember Jerusalem, which debuted in 2009 in a Tony nominated production starring Mark Rylance. Butterworth is a prolific writer for film and television, as well, and most recently contributed to the script for the last Bond movie, Spectre and the 2015 Whitey Bulger biopic Black Mass.

Cast members making their TheaterWorks debut include Jasmine Batchelor (The Other Woman), Billy Carter (The Man), and Andrea Goss (The Woman).

The creative team includes Brian Prather (Set Design), Tricia Barsamian (Costume Design), John Lasiter (Lighting Design), and Frederick Kennedy (Sound Design).
