THE LITTLE DOG LAUGHED, described as a scathingly funny, of-the-moment show written by Douglas Carter Beane, opens May 3 at Town Players of Newtown.
Originally produced off-Broadway at the Second Stage Theater, the story features well-known actor Mitchell (Miles Everett, Thomaston), who becomes involved in a physical relationship with hustler Alex (Todd Santa Maria, Cheshire). As a result, Diane (Karen Pope, Bridgewater), his acerbic agent, is concerned that Mitchell's "slight recurring case of homosexuality" will put the kibosh on his career. Meanwhile, Alex's on-again, off-again girlfriend Ellen (Carly Phypers, Brewster, NY) worries that she may be losing Alex permanently.
The New York Times said of THE LITTLE DOG LAUGHED, "The comedy of manners, a theatrical form widely believed to be long extinct in the American theater, has actually resurfaced on Broadway with all its vital signs intact."
David Bass of Danbury, who made his Town Players directorial debut last fall, returns to the Little Theatre to direct. In addition to Bass, the production crew includes producers Marla Manning of Easton and Pam Meister Jones of Newtown, stage manager Lynn Alexander of Southbury, assistant stage manager Sam Wall of Monroe, backstage assistant Erica Redfern of Monroe, lights and sound operator Sean Gantwerker of Ridgefield, set designers Dana Cole and Jeffrey Santo of Norwalk, costume designer Barbara Norman of Brookfield and lighting designer Claudia Toth of Newtown.
Please note that THE LITTLE DOG LAUGHED is a comedy that contains mature adult themes and language, and may not be suitable for audience members under 16.
