Just as midterm elections are winding down, the Square One Theatre Company in Stratford, Connecticut opens its 29th Anniversary Season with The God Game by Suzanne Bradbeer directed by Tom Holehan. Everybody has secrets. But the character Tom, the protagonist in this invigorating play The God Game, doesn't seem to have many.
No sex tapes, no history of electroshock therapy, no unfortunate Internet indiscretions, no heavy drinking. Tom is a junior United States senator with high approval ratings and a presidential candidate is considering him as a running mate. Unfortunately, he does harbor a doubt that one dares not speak its name in American politics and people would like him to keep quiet about it. The action takes place on Tom and Lisa's wedding anniversary. Lisa is the perfect political wife, who also runs a shelter for abused women and girls. Their old friend Matt drops by for what appears to be a surprise visit.
Matt was involved in a long-term romantic relationship with Tom's brother, Jay, who died in a car accident. But Matt's visit is strictly business. He's working for the current presidential candidate and is on a mission from the top.
