The Sherman Playhouse will be opening up their 2019 season with David Ives' Venus in Fur on Valentines weekend.
The plot centers around Thomas, a beleaguered playwright/director, who is desperate to find an actress to play Vanda, the female lead in his adaptation of the classic sadomasochistic tale Venus in Fur. Into his empty audition room walks a vulgar and equally desperate actress-oddly enough, named Vanda. Though utterly wrong for the sophisticated part, Vanda exhibits a strange command of the material, piquing Thomas's interest with her seductive talents and secretive manner. As the two work through the script, they blur the line between play and reality, entering into an increasingly serious game of submission and domination that only one of them can win. The play is recommended for mature audiences.
The play, directed by Katherine Almquist of Sharon, CT, features local talent Chris Luongo of Poughkeepsie, NY and Agnes Fohn of Sherman, CT. "The pairing of these two actors was clandestine." Says Director Almquist, "from the very start, their chemistry was palpable and inspired and was perfect to perform a sexy comic play that will sure to titillate all our lucky audience members. They are the perfect Valentine."
The play opens February 15 with a half price preview Thursday February 14 and plays through March 3rd. Fridays and Saturdays at 8:00 pm with two Sunday matinees Feb 24 and March 3 at 2 pm. For tickets, directions and more information please visit the website at http://www.shermanplayers.org.
