The Ridgefield Theater Barn presents THE FAIR SEX, the next in its Play Reading Series, written and directed by Patti Azzara and produced by Marla Manning, tonight, July 31st at 7:30PM. The event is free (donations are welcome) and light refreshments will be served.
It’s Denton, Montana, 2009 – where the cows outnumber the people, 3 to 1, green-bean casserole is the pot-luck meal of choice, and women who wear purple eye shadow are making more than just a fashion statement. Kate Mitchell, recently single, returns home from her life in Seattle to celebrate her parents’ 40th wedding anniversary with her siblings. As the only non-believer in the family, her arrival on a Sunday afternoon, long after mass, does not go smoothly. Her younger sister Gail, bitter from years of feeling abandoned and ignored, immediately lashes into Kate about her poor choice of men, career, life and faith. Later that evening, on a much-needed trip to the bar with sister-in-law Mary, Kate runs into Jake, the now-married man she left behind, but for whom there is still mutual attraction. As the days pass, it becomes harder for them to resist temptation. Meanwhile, Gail struggles with her own regrets and now faces a life that she fears will never be complete. Can these sisters learn to grow up and leave their petty, teenage differences behind? Can Kate fight her fear of being alone? Will Jake leave his wife to be with the woman he loves? What happens when women stop playing fair?
