RACE, by David Mamet. Multiple Award-winning playwright David Mamet tackles America's most controversial topic in a provocative new tale of sex, guilt and bold accusations. Two lawyers find themselves defending a wealthy white executive charged with raping a black woman. When a new legal assistant gets involved in the case, the opinions that boil beneath explode to the surface. Dangerous truths are revealed, and no punches are spared.

Tazewell Thompson, who staged TheaterWorks' celebrated productions
of Broke-ology, God of Carnage and A Steady Rain, directs Ward Duffy (Jack), Taneisha Duggan (Susan), Avery Glymph (Henry), and Jack Koenig (Charles) in RACE, the fourth play of TheaterWorks' 25th Anniversary Season.

The production's design team includes Donald Eastman (Sets), Harry Nadal (Costumes), Robert William Henderson Jr.(Lights), and Fabian Obispo (Sound). Production Manager is Michael Lenaghan.

OVERVIEW: David Mamet states "In my play a firm made up of three lawyers, two black and one white, is offered the chance to defend a white man charged with a crime against a black young woman. Race, like sex, is a subject in which it is near impossible to tell the truth". The play is intended as an addition to the ongoing dialogue about the subject of race. Audience members will be moved to self-scrutiny by Mamet's signature gritty yet finely tuned language.

STORYLINE:
When a rich white man is accused of raping a younger African American woman, he looks to a multicultural law firm for his defense. But even as his lawyers - one of them white, another black - begin to strategize, they must confront their own biases and assumptions about race relations in America.
