Performances continue for the Shakespeare on the Sound's immersive production of Macbeth. Directed by Artistic Director Claire Shannon Kelly, Macbeth transforms the idyllic Pinkney Park (177 Rowayton Avenue, Norwalk, CT) on the Five Mile River to the eerie Scottish Highlands to create an immersive experience for the audience; Macbeth's journey will be their journey too.
"I am very excited to share this journey into madness and tyranny with our audience," says Ms. Kelly. It's important to me that Macbeth doesn't start out as a villain, but the play shows us how the taste of power can corrupt. Macbeth's downfall is his inability to control his ambition that, like a snake, coils around him squeezing the humanity out of him. As Shakespeare did, we live in an era where politics is a blood sport. We couldn't imagine a better play to share with our audience right now."
Ms. Kelly and the design team blur the lines between actors and audience with a setting that evokes the "Ouroboros" (the ancient symbol of a snake eating its own tail). Several individual set locations will allow for the action of the play to be performed in and around the audience.
Macbeth will feature Drama Desk Award-winner Graham Stevens (In Transit) in the title role and Obie Award-winner Winsome Brown (Tale of 2 Cities) as Lady Macbeth. Additional cast includes: Matt Consalvo, Meghan Grover, John Hardin, James Hesse, David Reece Hutchison, Henry Jenkinson, Lily Lipman, Rod Singleton, Calvin Leon Smith, Nicholas Urda, Lucy Van Atta, Jessica Van Niel. The production will also include local Connecticut children: Phoebe Bryan, Sean Redahan, Karsten Rynearson, Michaela Maloney Seshan, Beatrice Shannon and Owen Tanzer.
The creative team for Macbeth is comprised of Brian Prather (scenic design), Grier Coleman (costume design), Jamie Roderick (lighting design) Alex Santullo (sound design), Damian Lamar Hudson (music composition), Rod Kinter (fight direction) and Dianna Cortez (vocal coaching). Maia Robbins-Zust is the Technical Director and the Production Stage Manager is Ed Herman. This year the production is being produced in association with 22Q Entertainment - Robert Levinstein and Alan Wager.
MacBeth continues through July 2. The production runs Tuesdays through Sundays at 7:30PM. The box office opens at 3:30pm and the park opens at 4pm.
Every night at 6:30pm, one hour in advance of the main stage production, there will be a special 30-minute Macbeth for Kids presentation for children performed by the Apprentice Company.
