Using the iconic sequined, red boot from the Tony Award winning hit Kinky Boots as a visual, the Palace Theater in conjunction with the United Way of Greater Waterbury and Connecticut Food Bank is asking the public to help Give Hunger the Boot.
Now through August 31, the theater is collecting non-perishable food items that may be dropped off in specially marked buckets in the Box Office lobby. The theater's window is decked out with a display using the Kinky Boots' show image amid grocery sacks and food items. As a way of encouraging donations the theater is offering $10 off select performances of the Broadway tour of Kinky Boots coming to the theater December 6 - 11, 2016. This special offer is only available for in-person ticket purchases for Kinky Boots performances on Tuesday December 6 and Wednesday, December 7.
Food collected will be distributed by the United Way of Greater Waterbury's Stock the Pantry initiative. The official campaign ended in June, but the Palace decided to keep theirs going through the end of summer to help families needing while school is out of session. The push will also help gather back to school lunch supplies. "While we may be vacationing and enjoying the fun of summertime, there are children in our own communities who go hungry because they miss the federally funded breakfast and lunch programs provided in schools", stated Palace Public Relations officer, Sheree Marcucci. "This is another way as an organization we can help the greater community we serve," she continued.
Items particularly needed are peanut butter, jelly, canned meats and fish; healthy snacks, boxed milk, juices and cereals. For more information call the Box Office at 203.346.2000. The theater is located at 100 East Main Street, Waterbury.
