Artistic Director Michael Bradford said, "The upcoming season features exciting new plays and iconic classics, all exploring the idea of truth in our world. Perhaps there is no more pressing topic for today and we are excited to embark upon this theatrical journey. Each one of these plays asks questions. Some will be answered, while others invite further discussion. We look forward to beginning this dialogue with our audience and sharing the experience of a great story."
Once you begin lying, how do you know when to stop? The season begins with one of the great classic comedies The Importance of Being Earnest by Oscar Wilde. Wilde's characters find themselves in a dizzying world in which "the truth is rarely pure and simple". The play, directed by Jean Randich, will run October 5-15, 2017 in the Harriet S. Jorgensen Theatre.
The second show of the Main Stage season will be Our Country's Good by Timberlake Wertenbaker. This acclaimed and award-winning historical drama provides both passion and humor in the exploration of the humanizing power of theatre. The production runs November 30 through December 9, 2017 and will be directed by Michael Bradford who staged last season's Waiting for Lefty / Severance.
When do lies have more power than truth? In February, CRT will explore that question in Arthur Miller's The Crucible. Miller's classic tale of persecution and fear in Salem, Massachusetts is still relevant today. Paul Mullins (I'm Connecticut, The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, An Absolute Turkey) returns to direct. Performances run February 22-March 4, 2018.
The Main Stage season will come to a close with the comedy As You Like It by William Shakespeare. Escape into the forest of Arden as Disguises and secrets get in the way of love and result in hilarious love triangles that only a 'magical transformation' can fix. The comedy, directed by Shakespeare & Company member Kristin Wold, will run April 19-29, 2018.
On the studio stage Artistic Director Michael Bradford has focused on new and contemporary works. The studio works series begins with acclaimed playwright Jen Silverman's That Poor Girl and How He Killed Her. Last seen with a mysterious diplomat's son, the disappearance of college student Alyssa Long leads her friends to start a social media campaign demanding justice. As the social media bandwagon rolls on, discovering the truth about what happened to Alyssa becomes less important than who has posted the most recent video condemning her murder. Silverman's play offers a darkly comedic exploration of justice and activism in the age of social media. The production will run October 26 - November 5, 2017 and is directed by Matthew J. Pugliese.
The second studio stage offering will be Qui Nguyen's She Kills Monsters, directed by Tamilla Woodard. Nguyen's critically acclaimed, award-winning play will "slash and shape shift its way into your heart". After the loss of her little sister Tilly in a car accident, Agnes attempts to get to know her better through the Dungeons and Dragons notebook Tilly left behind. Immersed in a wild, action-packed adventure in a fantasy world full of monsters, homicidal fairies and elves, and 90's-pop culture, Agnes learns more about her sister and the misunderstood gaming world she was a part of before she was abruptly taken away. She Kills Monsters will run March 22 - March 31, 2018 in the Studio Theatre.
