It's a night of bipartisan lampooning when The Capitol Steps brings "Orange is the New Barack" to The Ridgefield Playhouse on November 3
The Capitol Steps have elevated political satire to an art form. Before The Daily Show, Full Frontal, and The Colbert Report, this Washington, DC-based comedy troupe gave audience laugh cramps with their bipartisan lampooning. Now they're back with a brand new show! The Ridgefield Playhouse, Barts Tree Service Comedy Series and Ridgefield Magazine Broadway and Cabaret Series brings a night of bi-partisan hilarity with The Capitol Steps: Orange is the New Barack on Friday, November 3 at 8 p.m. The Capitol Steps began in 1981 as a group of Senate staffers who set out to satirize their employers, and haven't let up since. If you've been keeping with the news, you know there's no shortage of material. It doesn't matter if you're a Republican or Democrat, a snowflake or a deplorable: neither side is safe from the group that puts the "MOCK" in Democracy! Media sponsor for this event is WSHU Public Radio 91.1 fm.
For more than 30 years, these political satirists have been putting politics and scandal to music. Some of their newest songs includes treats such as "Small Hands" (sung by Melania, a parody of Pointer Sisters' "Slow Hand"), "Tweet Tweet" (a parody of "Rockin' Robin," inspired by the President's tweet storms), "Don't Know Much About History" (with Betsy DeVos crooning "Don't know much about history...Don't know much biology") and "Putin on the Blitz," based on "Puttin' on the Ritz," in which Vladimir explains his philosophy on asserting power ("...Russian force I must assert - don't make me take off my shirt - you'll say 'tsk tsk' - Putin is a risk..."). Bone up on your politics with tongue-in-cheek spoonerisms to cutting-edge political satire and clever song parodies as they hurl unbiased barbs at both sides of the aisle. Taking a lesson from the Trump family--never miss a chance to slip in an endorsement for your business--this concert is named after the troupe's upcoming album, "Orange is the New Barack."
Capitol Steps shows, being headline-driven, are unpredictable. So the complete song list and cast list can't be forecast in advance. The troupe pounces on breaking news events in order to keep the show fresh. In the overheated news cycle surrounding our 45th president, this has been particularly challenging.
Elaina Newport, a founding member of the group and one of its lead writers, says she's even texted updates to performers waiting backstage to go on.
Political satire is good for you. A recent study found that post-election stress has been peaking among men in blue states, and this is suppressing language growth and cognitive development in families with young children. So citizens are urged t so they can laugh off their political angst and save the New York family.
