On Saturday, August 14, the New London Maritime Society, in co-operation with the City of New London, launch a lottery to Turn On the Whale Tail Fountain. The fountain is located on the New London's new Parade Plaza, at the foot of State Street, just across from the New London Railroad Station. The lottery winner gets the honor of switching on the water for the Whale Tail Fountain--the jewel at the center of New London's newly-redesigned Parade Plaza.

Five-dollar tickets will be sold at venues throughout the City, beginning Saturday, August 14. A winner will be chosen from all entries once fountain construction is complete--the drawing tentatively is set to take place at noon on Friday, August 27. The date for the winner to actually switch on the water will be determined by the construction process, and is expected to be within the next month.

Tickets will be available at the Custom House Maritime Museum, 150 Bank Street, New London, and at other venues in the City beginning Saturday, August 14. They also will be sold on New London's Parade Plaza this Saturday evening, prior to the 7 PM performance of Buckwheat Zydeco.

Proceeds from the lottery will be evenly divided between the City and the New London Maritime Society. The City's portion of the proceeds will go towards funding one more special event on New London's Parade Plaza this fall. The New London Maritime Museum will use its funds to support the good work of the Custom House Maritime Museum.
