Eastbound Theatre, a division of the Milford Arts Council (MAC), is excited to announce a special one-night only theater event, Work Is The Curse Of The Drinking Classes, written by Neil Titley and performed by Johnson Flucker. This performance takes place April 2nd at 4 pm at the Milford Center for the Arts, 40 Railroad Avenue, Milford, CT. This event has cabaret seating and it is BYO-everything. So bring a bottle of your favorite wine, a snack and enjoy this wonderful performance.
With this remarkable one-man production, Johnson Flucker returns to the Eastbound Theatre where he previously portrayed William Randolph Hearst in The Cat's Meow. Mr. Flucker's career as a performer spans 40 years, during which time he has been a professional singer and conductor as well as a familiar voice in several Walt Disney movies, including The Hunchback of Notre Dame, Beauty and the Beast, and Aladdin. Recent acting credits include lead roles in Hamlet, 1776, and Enron.
With Work Is The Curse Of The Drinking Classes Mr. Flucker will introduce audiences to another famous character, Oscar Wilde. This time the setting is Paris, August, 1898, and Wilde - poet, novelist, playwright, and truth-teller, has just been released from a two-year prison term. Destitute and near friendless, he sits in a café contemplating his past, his present, and his prospects for a not-too-promising future.
Quoting extensively from Wilde's own writings, Work Is The Curse Of The Drinking Classes weaves a fascinatingly dramatic personal and intellectual portrait of one of the most remarkable figures of the 19th century. Brimming with Wildean epigrams and anecdotes, the play is at once hilarious and heartbreaking while being completely contemporary in its critique of people, the press, and politics, and lifting the veil on the man who helped define modern individuality. It reveals the aesthete and author at his most sarcastic and tender, resilient and vulnerable.
Work Is The Curse Of The Drinking Classes was awarded Best Period Piece as part of New York's UnitedSolo Theatre Festival, and now this remarkable one-man show will come to the Eastbound Theatre at the Milford Arts Center. Ticket prices are as follows: General Admission $20, Seniors/Students/MAC Members $15; and a Premier Package for $40 which will include priority seating, a signed copy of the script, and a glass of champagne with Mr. Flucker after the show In MAC's newly renovated Speakeasy!
