Music Mountain, America's longest running summer chamber music festival, continues its 89th season with the St. Petersburg Piano Quartet, offering an afternoon of Beethoven and Brahms on Sunday, August 19 (3pm). First time guest Josh Lawrence & Color Theory fuse the blues and Afro-Cuban music on Saturday, August 18 (6:30pm)! Concerts are scheduled through September 23.
The St. Petersburg Piano Quartet returns to Gordon Hall with a remarkable program to include Beethoven: Violin & Piano Sonata #8 in G Major, Op. 30/3; Beethoven: Piano Quartet #3 in C Major, WoO 36; and Brahms: Piano Quartet in A Major, Op. 26.
The St. Petersburg Piano Quartet was founded in 2014, making its début in New York City. Since then, they have performed nationwide. Founding members Alla Aranovskaya and Boris Vayner are the first violinist and violist of the St. Petersburg String Quartet. Pianist Tao Lin has been soloist with the Moscow Chamber Orchestra, Winnipeg Symphony, Miami Chamber Orchestra, and Knoxville Civic Orchestra. Cuban-American cellist Thomas Mesa has toured with Itzhak Perlman both nationally and internationally. He has been soloist with the Grammy-nominated The Crossing Choir and has performed at Carnegie Hall, Alice Tully Hall, and Boston's Jordan Hall.
Saturday evening, Music Mountain welcomes first time guest Josh Lawrence & Color Theory! They bring a fusion of the blues and Afro-Cuban music. Josh Lawrence is a critically acclaimed trumpeter and composer; he has established himself as a creative artist of the highest caliber. His ensemble, Color Theory, formed in 2016, was dubbed "an all-star outfit of musicians" by The New York Times. All About Jazz noted their latest album, Contrast, is a "stellar gathering of musicians." Bandmates include pianist Orrin Evans, drummer Anwar Marshall, the Curtis Brothers, pianist Zaccai and bassist Luques, alto saxophonist Caleb Curtis, and trombonist David Gibson.
The Saturday Evening Twilight Series features pre-concert dinners at the charming Falls Village Inn. Experience a piece of history built over 175 years ago that helped shape the history of Falls Village.
Music Mountain is located in Falls Village, Connecticut on Music Mountain Road, where a short scenic drive will bring you to Gordon Hall atop Music Mountain. Chamber music concerts continue with Cassatt String Quartet with Paul Katz, cello (August 26); Labor Day Benefit Concert & Reception with Peter Serkin & guests (September 2); Shanghai String Quartet (September 9); and American String Quartet with Robert McDonald, piano (September 16).
The Saturday Evening Twilight Series continues with Amina Figarova Quintet (August 25); Gabriel Alegría Afro-Peruvian Sextet (September 1); The Bridge Trio (September 8); and Roxy Coss Quintet (September 15).
Specially Priced Concerts include: Labor Day Benefit Concert & Reception on Sunday, September 2. All tickets $75. Special Concert & Wine Reception to Celebrate the Completion of the Beethoven Quartet Cycle on Sunday, September 9. All tickets: $60.
Regularly scheduled Chamber Music Concerts are $35. Twilight Series Concerts are $30. Children ages 5-18 are admitted FREE to ALL CONCERTS when accompanied by a ticket holder. Saturday evening Twilight Concerts are at 6:30 pm. Sunday afternoon Chamber Music concerts are at 3 pm.
