Long Wharf Theatre, in conjunction with Supreme Talent International will present Smokey Joe's Café: The Songs of Leiber and Stoller, on the Mainstage as part of its summer season. The musical runs from July 10-28 on the Mainstage. Tickets are $55.
This electrifying musical features nearly 40 of the greatest songs ever recorded, including the hits On Broadway, Hound Dog, Jailhouse Rock, Stand By Me, Spanish Harlem, Love Potion #9, Yakety Yak, and I'm A Woman, this Grammy-winning and Tony-nominated musical powerhouse was the longest-running musical revue in Broadway history, running for over 2,000 performances. Nominated for seven Tony Awards, including Best Musical, Best Featured Actor in a Musical, Smokey Joe's Café also won a Grammy Award in 1996.
Jerry Lieber and Mike Stoller met as teenagers in 1950 Los Angeles over a shared love of the blues. Just five years later, the duo signed a deal with Atlantic Records. Over the course of their career, the artists who have recorded songs by Leiber and Stoller include The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, B.B. King, JAmes Brown, Little Richard, Jerry Lee Lewis, The Beach Boys, Buddy Holly, Fats Domino, Frank Sinatra, Barbra Streisand, Jimi Hendrix, Muddy Waters, Joe Williams, Tom Jones, Count Basie, Edith Piaf, Eric Clapton, Willie Nelson, Luther Vandross, John Lennon, Aretha Franklin, and many others. The songwriters were inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
The cast includes Vida Allworthy, DerRick Baker, Christopher Brasfield, Dawn Marie Driver, Jose Figueroa Jr., Ron Lucas, Jay Rivera , Famecia Ward, and Stevanie Anita Williams. The production is directed by A. Curtis Farrow, with musical direction by John Bronston and Darius Frowner.
