Long Wharf Theatre is partnering with the New Haven Public Schools to offer a pair of jazz concerts featuring some of the best student musicians the city has to offer.
Students from Hill Regional Career High School and Mauro-Sheridan Interdistrict Magnet School will be performing next week before two performances of the hit musical Ella. Hill Regional, led by Scott McCoy, will perform from 6 to 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 13. Curtain is 7 p.m. Mauro-Sheridan, led by Olivia Malin, will perform on Saturday, Oct. 16 from 2 to 2:30 p.m. - the performance of Ella will begin at 3 p.m.
"Many people don't realize that
Ella Fitzgerald actually began her career in New Haven with the
Chick Webb Orchestra. It's cool to think that the New Haven schools are keeping jazz alive and I can't think of a better way to celebrate the music and the life of
Ella Fitzgerald than by having students perform in the lobby prior to seeing the show," said Annie DiMartino, director of education.
