Long Wharf Theatre will close the curtain on No Child..., written and performed by Nilaja Sun, directed by Hal Brooks, April 18, 2010 on Stage II.

The plot revolves around teaching artist Nilaja Sun arrives at the fictional Malcolm X High in the Bronx, reading to lead a group of tenth graders through the production of a play. In the face of an ambivalent student body, a constant stream of new teachers, and impending Regents exams, Nilaja struggles to bring her project to life. No one - teacher, student, janitor, principal or security guard - is left behind by Sun's hilarious and heartbreaking expose, based on her own experience as a teaching artist in New York City.

No Child ... was first produced by Epic Theatre Center at the Beckett Theatre in New York City in 2006. For her creation and performance of No Child... and its subsequent national tour, Nilaja garnered 17 awards including: an Obie Award, a Lucille Lortel Award, two Outer Critics Circle Awards including the John Gassner playwriting award for Outstanding New American Play, a Theatre World Award, the Helen Hayes Award, and an LA Ovation Award and was named the Best One-Person Show at the U.S. Comedy Arts Festival.

Nilaja's New York credits include No Child..., Einstein's Gift, Pieces of the Throne, Time and the Conways (each with Epic Theatre Ensemble), Huck and Holden (Cherry Lane Theatre), The Cook (Intar), and The Adventures of Barrio Grrrl! (Summer Play Festival). She has also been seen on "30 Rock," "Law and Order: SVU," and as Detective Gloria Hubbard in the film The International. As a solo performer, Nilaja's projects include critically acclaimed Blues for a Gray Sun (Intar), La Nubia Latina, Black and Blue, Insufficient Fare, Due to the Tragic Events of... and Mixtures. A native of the Lower East Side, she is a Princess Grace Award winner and has worked as a teaching artist in New York City.

Long Wharf Theatre (Gordon Edelstein, Artistic Director and Ray Cullom, Managing Director), entering its 45th season, is recognized as a leader in American theatre, producing fresh and imaginative revivals of classics and modern plays, rediscoveries of neglected works and a variety of world and American premieres. More than 30 Long Wharf productions have transferred virtually intact to Broadway or Off-Broadway, some of which include Durango by Julia Cho, the Pulitzer Prize-winning plays Wit by Margaret Edson, The Shadow Box by Michael Cristofer and The Gin Game by D.L. Coburn. The theatre is an incubator of new works, including last season's A Civil War Christmas by Paula Vogel and Coming Home by Athol Fugard. Long Wharf Theatre has received New York Drama Critics Awards, Obie Awards, the Margo Jefferson Award for Production of New Works, a Special Citation from the Outer Critics Circle and the Tony® Award for Outstanding Regional Theatre.
