Long Wharf Theatre, (Jacob G. Padrón, Artistic Director and Joshua Borenstein, Managing Director) proudly announces its 55th season beginning October 9, 2019. This season transcends both time and place with stories which speak to our shared humanity and demonstrate our shared connections. It will be an exciting bridge to new Artistic Director Jacob G. Padrón's inaugural 2020-2021 season.
The 2019-2020 season will introduce important voices that speak to our collective past, present and future to New Haven audiences. The season opens with the world premiere of Ricardo Pérez González's beautiful love story, On the Grounds of Belonging. Also featured is the Tony and Pulitzer Prize-winning play of survival against great odds, Doug Wright's I Am My Own Wife. Lauren Yee's The Great Leap tells the story of a scrappy basketball hot-shot playing in high stakes game across the Pacific, and Lloyd Suh's The Chinese Lady is the powerful and mesmerizing tale of America's first female Chinese immigrant. The season will also feature a modern adaptation of a classic work, to be announced at a later date.
In addition, Long Wharf Theatre continues its commitment to furthering the reach of our education programs. Reaching 6,000 students of all ages annually, the 2019-2020 season will offer four Student Theatre Series productions, Theatre for Young Audiences, school partnerships, year-round Studio School classes, a newly formed Young Adult Council, and the third annual New Haven Regional August Wilson Monologue Competition in collaboration with Yale Repertory Theatre. LWT Education is committed to creating experiences that inspire deep and long-lasting relationships with schools and students that foster creativity, empathy, teamwork, and a lifelong appreciation for theatre.
Long Wharf Theatre also continues its work in the New Haven community. Next season, we will produce the New Haven Play Project - a city-wide celebration rooted in joy, inclusivity, and imagination built through a network of local partnerships that culminates with a free performance at Long Wharf with, for, and by those who call New Haven their home. Partnerships with the New Haven Free Public Library and Integrated Refugee and Immigrant Services (IRIS) continue as well.
Subscription renewals and new subscriptions on sale now, single tickets will go on sale early May. For more information, visit longwharf.org or call 203-787-4282.
