Hooray! Jungle Jack Hanna and his live animal friends are coming back to the stage in Storrs on Sunday, March 7, 2010 at 2 pm as part of the Jorgensen Children's Series, supported by Bank of America. Animal expert Jungle Jack Hanna is one of the most visible and respected ambassadors between the animal and human worlds.
Jack grew up on a farm, and as a boy cleaned cages for a local vet, a job that taught him love and respect for animals. Later at college, he got into trouble for keeping ducks in his dorm room. He owned and operated a pet store, then became the director of a small Florida zoo. In 1978 he was named director of the Columbus Zoo in Ohio, where he upgraded the antiquated cages to appropriate habitats and created engaging new programs for the public. Now Emeritus Director there, he takes his animal show on the road for 100 appearances throughout the country each year. He loves the shows, he says, because he gets to "communicate with people and hear their concerns about the environment."
Jack has been a regular guest and wildlife correspondent on television (including appearances on The Late Show with David Letterman, Good Morning America, and Larry King Live), creator of the nationally syndicated, long-running series Jack Hanna's Animal Adventures, and executive producer of Jack Hanna's Into the Wild, winner of the 2008 Emmy Award for Outstanding Children's Series. He has also written an exciting new autobiography, Jungle Jack: My Wild Life and is the author of a delightful children's book series about wildlife. He has even been named one of People magazine's "50 Most Beautiful People."
Jungle Jack's live show at Jorgensen will feature many of his favorite animal friends, as well as fascinating and funny stories and film clips from his adventures around the world. Audiences of all ages give his inspiring, informative and entertaining shows rave reviews. Youngsters will have a chance to interact on stage with him and some animals that most people have probably never seen before. Based on Jack's passionate wildlife advocacy, the show includes multi-media stories of dwindling populations of animals like the gorillas and endearing images of Jack with newborns. The audience will remember what they see at Jorgensen for a lifetime.
Jungle Jack Hanna and his furry friends will appear at Jorgensen Center for the Performing Arts, 2132 Hillside Road on the UConn campus in Storrs. Adult tickets are $13; children $11.
