Tony Award-winner Jim Dale will bring his new one man show to Long Wharf Theatre this June.
Just Jim Dale, written by Dale and directed by Tony Award-winner Richard Maltby Jr., will take place June 14-17 and June 21-24 on Stage II. Tickets are $30.
A treasure trove of humorous and heart-warming show business delights, Jim Dale recounts his amazing life on stage. Growing up in England with dreams of performing at The Music Hall, little Jimmy Smith because his country’s youngest working comedian. He became Tony Award-winning Broadway veteran Jim Dale, performing in the hits Barnum and Me and My Girl and voicing the Harry Potter novels. Great music – “Georgy Girl,” “The Lambeth Walk,” “Leaning on a Lamppost” and many others – enliven a fun evening with a charming raconteur. This one man show was first staged in 2011.
Dale recently worked with Long Wharf Theatre Artistic Director Gordon Edelstein on Broadway in Athol Fugard’s Road to Mecca. “Jim is one of the most prodigiously gifted performers of our time – actor, singer, dancer, comedian, and songwriter. Jim is in a class by himself,” Edelstein said.
Dale has also previously appeared in Long Wharf Theatre’s productions of Privates on Parade in the 1978-79 season, and Travels with My Aunt during the 1994-95 season.
Dale has had a varied and impressive career. As a Broadway stage actor, Jim has won a Tony Award (Barnum), five Tony nominations (Candide, Scapino, Joe Egg, Barnum, Threepenny Opera), four Drama Desk Awards, four Outer Critics Awards and the Lucille Lortel Award. He was nominated for an Academy Award for writing the lyrics for the song "Georgy Girl." He was nominated for a BAFTA Academy Award (Best Newcomer) for Adolf Hitler - My Part in His Downfall.
As an audiobook narrator, he has won two Grammy Awards, seven Grammy nominations, and a record ten Audie Awards – the Oscars of the narrating world – including Narrator of the Year (2001, 2005, 2007, 2008) and Audio Book of the Year 2004. He has narrated all seven “Harry Potter “ books and been awarded two Guinness World Records; One for creating 146 different character voices for “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows” and a second for occupying the first six places in the Top Ten Audiobooks of America and Canada.
He was the first inductee into the Audio Hall of Fame and recently was inducted into the American Theatre Hall of Fame. In 2003 Queen Elizabeth II honored Jim with the Member of the Order of the British Empire.
