Town Players' closing production of 2017, THE TRIP TO BOUNTIFUL, opens November 10 at The Little Theatre.
THE TRIP TO BOUNTIFUL tells the tale of Carrie Watts, an aging widow who lives in a cramped apartment in Houston with a daughter-in-law who despises her and a son who dares not take her side. Carrie dreams of returning to the town of Bountiful, where she was raised, one more time before she dies. There, she hopes to reclaim her dignity and a sense of serenity. One day, while son Ludie is at work and daughter-in-law Jessie Mae is at the drugstore, Carrie makes her escape and travels by bus to Bountiful. She befriends a young woman named Thelma along the way. However, as she draws closer to her destination, Carrie begins to discover that her beloved hometown is no longer as she remembers it.
According to the New York Times, "THE TRIP TO BOUNTIFUL is about the myth of an idea called home. Mr. Foote creates characters, nearly all of whom come from the same stretch of provincial Texas, who long to believe in the reality of real estate, that a house is a fortress and an anchor in a world of threatening flux. But this bleakly sentimental playwright is as merciless as he is compassionate. Home is only an illusion for his people, and everyone is ultimately an orphan, even when surrounded by family."
Directed by Brian DeToma of Danbury, THE TRIP TO BOUNTIFUL features the talents of Rachel Ames of Bethel, Christopher Bird of Newtown, Amanda Brenner of Fairfield, Deborah Carlson of Trumbull, Roberto Perez of Danbury, Mark Rubino of Southbury, and Tom Torpey of Stratford. The production crew includes co-producers Gene Golaszewski of Brookfield and Christopher Cooney of Southport, and stage manager Nicole Veach of New Milford.
THE TRIP TO BOUNTIFUL runs November 11 - December 2. Curtain times are 8 PM Fridays and Saturdays, with 2 PM matinees on November 19 & 26 and a performance on Thursday, November 30 at 8 PM. Tickets are $22; $18 for matinee performances.
