The Hartt School Community Division, University of Hartford will begin accepting applications January 1, 2018 for their popular Summer Musical Theatre Intensive programs, led by Hartt voice faculty and program director Michelle Murray Fiertek. Summer Musical Theatre Preprofessional and Junior programs are exceptional summer-study opportunities for young performers to develop their acting, singing, and dance skills while working closely with top industry professionals. The programs culminate in showcase performances that are tailored specifically to the participants.
Actor Kenneth Cavett and Broadway music director Wendy Cavett (current conductor of Hamilton: An American Musical and Come From Away) will return this year as co-artistic directors of SMTI Preprofessional. Other faculty includes New York-based actress and writer Moira O-Sullivan, choreographer Kaitlyn Krewson (CT), and assistant music director Mark Ceppetelli (The Hartt School). The following masterclasses are part of the 2018 curriculum:
HAMILTON: AN AMERICAN MUSICAL CHOREOGRAPHY MASTER CLASS: An opportunity to learn the original choreography from Broadway's Hamilton, presented by a member of the creative team, straight from the stage to the studio.
Tracey Moore "AUDITIONING FOR COLLEGE" MASTER CLASS - Sing and present a monologue for this renowned Broadway actress, author of "Acting the Song: Performance Skills for the Musical Theatre," and current Associate Professor of Theatre at The Hartt School. Get valuable feedback on your collegiate audition material.
MUSIC THEATRE AUDITION MASTER CLASS - Perform for a top NYC casting director who will offer one-on-one feedback and coaching on your musical theatre audition technique. Aside from learning proper audition technique and protocol, hone your acting through song skills, find out if your cut shows off your personality and vocal range, and learn how to create strong cuts for auditions. Moreover, there will be a Q&A about the business.

SMTI Junior is led by CT faculty members Kimberly West (Director), Sarah Reed (Musical Director), and Christine Simoes (Choreographer). The following masterclasses are part of the 2018 curriculum:
IMPROVISATION MASTER CLASS: An opportunity to learn about and practice theatrical improvisation with New York-based actress and writer Moira O'Sullivan. Have fun, get comfortable, and be able to handle yourself in all acting situations!
PERFORMANCE TECHNIQUE MASTER CLASS: Perform for Hartt/HCD Voice faculty member Janelle Robinson and get feedback and coaching on your musical theatre performance technique. Janelle is a master performer and teacher whose Broadway credits include the production of Cameron Mackintosh and Disney's Mary Poppins in which she originated the role of Mrs. Corry; Oklahoma, also produced by Cameron Mackintosh; and the revival of Showboat in addition to the 1st National Tours of Thoroughly Modern Millie and Showboat.
HIP-HOP DANCE MASTER CLASS: Learn the hip-hop movement style from Connecticut's own dancer and instructor Keith Crockett in this high energy, fun, and very supportive environment!
